Anyone actually using exported configs from other people, or is it all DIY

Config export/import means people can hand over a full setup. On paper that's great for someone new who doesn't know what any of the sliders do.

In practice, imported configs are usually someone else's taste and half of them are built around a class or a monitor you don't have. Has anyone actually kept one, or does everyone end up rebuilding from scratch?

I've used two. Both as a starting point, both heavily edited after. Worth it for the FOV and smooth values alone, since those are the hardest to guess.

Same. Import, then strip it. Faster than building from zero even if you throw most of it out.

So "template" not "setup".

Exactly. Anyone who imports a full config and changes nothing is going to have a bad time.

The exception is colour schemes. Those transfer fine and nobody wants to hand-pick 30 shades.

Some of the exported ones are just chaos though. Full skeleton, max distance, every layer on, and it runs like mud.

Then strip it, like TwoPixels said. It's a template, not gospel.

Fair enough, I'll grab one for the numbers and rebuild the rest.
